In 2006, Microsoft released Windows Vista. It was supposed to be great but it was delivered years late, and when it finally released it was a slow, buggy mess that no one wanted to use. It wanted all of your memory, and it wouldn’t run well on the computer you already had without significant upgrades. People went out of their way to use its predecessor, since it was consistently faster and more compatible with their applications.

Let me type that paragraph again, with a few subtle changes: In 2001, Apple released Mac OS X 10.0.

Microsoft-Security-EssentialsMicrosoft Security Essentials (MSE) is an anti-malware product that works via the cloud, a successor to OneCare, and contains quite a bit of promise. The beta versions had a strong ability to detect and remove malware, and as the product grows, its strength will only increase as more and more users automatically submit telemetry to the cloud. Even so, MSE already has a strong base, with 400,000 testers during the beta release.

MSE will also be completely free (assuming that your operating system passing the WGA test), matching the company’s belief in anti-virus software. The program is mainly being marketed as a lightweight, effective solution especially meant for those who do not currently have existing protection (estimated at 50-60% of users) or consumers whose anti-virus suite has expired, leaving them open to attacks by malware.

As for the release date, according to a message sent to participants of the beta, Microsoft plans to release the final version of MSE soon: “the final version of Microsoft Security Essentials will be released to the public in the coming weeks.” In the meantime, feel free to give the beta a try, and potentially helping to improve the product:

bosesounddock10Say the name Bose to your average gadget hound and they will think of expensive products that tend to sound good. That is an accurate description of the latest product from Bose that has debuted today called the SoundDock 10.

The SoundDock 10 is an iPhone and iPod speaker dock that promises big sound from a smallish 9″ H x 17″ W x 10″ deep docking station. The dock uses new Bose tech including a smaller waveguide that has been reduced from 75″ to 52″ for this product without affecting the sound quality.

Bose is also using a new woofer design that is small, but able to produce bass levels more like much larger speakers. The device can charge and play music from any dockable iPhone or iPod and has a video out to send video to your TV. The downside to the SoundDock 10 is that it retails for $599.
