Wave goodbye to Google…..Wave

I have used Google Wave.

  • I played with it for a few days.
  • I tested it with friends.
  • I couldn’t find a purpose for it.
  • I have not logged in to it in well over a month.
  • I do not miss it.

I am not sure what problem Google was trying to solve with Wave. Perhaps they invented a problem, which no one really has and then developed a solution for that invented problem. Either way I am declaring Google Wave useless for the majority of Internet users.

Email is still communication king and will most likely remain that way, until we all have 2 way video communicators built in to our watches and phones.

Windows 7 Troubleshooting, part 1

VN:F [1.8.1_1037]

In part one of this (hopefully) two part series, we’ll examine the Troubleshooting control panel in Windows 7, specifically its program compatibility wizard. Don’t want to use Windows XP mode? Maybe this tool will help.

Troubleshooting in Windows has always been a mixed bag. The operating system’s error messages typically range from unhelpfully ambiguous (Windows cannot eject this drive, one or more applications may be using it) to downright cryptic (my personal favorite is the Windows 9x-era “Your computer has performed an illegal operation”). In the vast majority of cases, users are stuck with puzzling out the problem on their own.

Microsoft has taken a step toward changing that with the new Troubleshooting applet in the Control Panel. Let’s see how useful this addition to Windows really is.

You’ll find the Troubleshooting panel in the Control Panel, or by typing “troubleshooting” into the Search bar in the Start menu. The first time you launch it, the applet may ask you if you’d like to keep it up to date using the Internet – I see no reason not to, and so this guide assumes that you’re keeping the Troubleshooting panel updated.

If you don’t know what you are doing, stop selling businesses VoIP!!

angry-on-the-phoneI have seen it time and time again.  A small business with multiple phone lines, wants to save money by switching over to VoIP.

The business owner, usually not knowing anything about the technology other than it can save them money on phone bills, typically hires an outside consultant to come in and revamp their inner office workings.

Equipment is ordered the system is built and installed, and everything seems like it is working.

Then the problems creep up…  Call quality issues, from echo, to voice stutter, to the complete inability to make a call to specific phone numbers or making calls at all, render the newly installed system virtually unusable in a functioning day to day business.

PS3 3.0 / 3.01 firmware update making Blu-ray drive unusable?

What could possibly cause nearly 700 comments on an official Sony blog post announcing the relatively minor 3.01 firmware update for the PS3?

The age old problem of an update that apparently breaks more than it fixes.

Why I hate GFI Faxmaker 14 or Exhange 2007 or Both…

gfi_logoI get a call today from one of my clients to let me know that they have not gotten any faxes emailed to them as PDF files from GFI Faxmaker for over a day.

Figuring this was one of those run of the mill “issues”, I had them reboot their server and assumed all would be right with the world.
I was wrong.

The GFI Faxmaker monitor tool is pretty useless, I was getting errors listed about being unable to deliver mail because of a moved folder. No mention as to what that folder was though left me with only one real option, GFI’s own support forum.
