Samsung Omnia II for Verizon in the flesh, Windows Mobile 6.1 on board

We finally got a good, hard look at the Verizon-customized version of Samsung’s Omnia II, and we’ve got good news and bad news: the good news is that the phone’s a darker, more reasonable shade in person than it was in that press shot we’d seen before, but the bad news is that we’ve confirmed it’s running 6.1. Anyone daring to release a 6.1 phone at this point is at serious risk of getting laughed out of the room unless they offer an upgrade path mere minutes afterwards, so we’re hoping that by the time this is on shelves, it’ll either be running 6.5 out of the box or there’ll be an update program announced in conjunction with the release. Otherwise, the display’s absolutely phenomenal (indoors, anyhow) and TouchWiz seems to work as well as it did on the original model, though scrolling through menus got a bit laggy at times — isn’t it kinda weird that a years-old platform can practically max out a circa-2009 device? Check out a quick gallery below.

nvidiaGood news for people with nVidia graphics cards – today, the manufacturer released its 191.07 graphics drivers for all desktop graphics cards. As with the last few releases, these drivers fully support both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7.

These drivers support the usual goodies for users of cards in the GeForce 8 series or above – namely, PhysX, CUDA, WDDM 1.1, and DirectCompute, a series of technologies geared toward making your graphics card do more than play the latest games.

So what? It’s just another driver release, right? Well, that in itself is remarkable, and it shows just how far ahead Windows 7 is of Windows Vista.

ATI Radeon HD 5870 is the first video card to bitstream TrueHD and DTS-HD

ATI Radeon HD 5870

The good news is that you can finally get both compressed and uncompressed HD audio off a Blu-ray Disc and into your A/V receiver without the need of a dedicated sound card. The bad news is that at $380, the ATI Radeon HD 5870 still costs more than a stand-alone Blu-ray player and that price doesn’t even include playback software. That’s ok with us though, as we’re used to being charged early adopter tax, and now the first video card with this ability is released, it should only be a matter of time before this feature trickles down to video cards we can actually afford.

ATI Radeon HD 5870 is the first video card to bitstream TrueHD and DTS-HD originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 30 Sep 2009 19:43:00 EST.
