AT&T Opens Network To VoIP iPhone Apps

skype-iphone-2Users of Skype and other VoIP apps will be able to make calls on AT&T’s 3G network, reversing a previous decision by the company.

AT&T (NYSE: T) on Tuesday opened its 3G network to VoIP calls on the iPhone, reversing its previous position, as federal regulators consider applying proposed net neutrality rules to mobile phones.

AT&T’s decision applies only to Apple’s smartphone. The wireless carrier does not allow the use of voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP, over its 3G network on other mobile phones. Before the reversal, VoIP applications from Skype and other companies could make calls on the iPhone only over a Wi-Fi connection.

AT&T said it notified Apple and the Federal Communications Commission of its decision Tuesday. “Today’s decision was make after evaluating our customers’ expectations and use of the device compared to dozens of others we offer,” Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive of AT&T mobility and consumer markets, said in a statement.

Only 443,000 CableCARDs deployed into consumer’s equipment

CableCARD

Here we are about five years after CableCARDs became available and only 443,000 of ‘em have been deployed into 3rd party hardware — you know, like a TiVo HD or a Windows Media Center Digital Cable Tuner. If you think that’s a lot, think again, as that is barely 1 percent of the 41.5 million digital cable subscribers in the US. This was according to a report delivered to the FCC by the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) and really gives credibility to the CEA’s claim that the technology is ineffective at its intended purpose. As consumers we know all too well why the currently implementation of the technology is worthless to the other 99 percent of cable subscribers, which is a combination of the fact that 3rd party CableCARD host devices are not privy to all the same features of the cable company’s set-top — like VOD and PPV — but also because the cable operators do just about everything possible to talk you out of using them. Regardless of the reasons one thing is for sure, CableCARDs have not fulfilled the requirements set by the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and the FCC needs to stop wasting time and get back to the drawing board.

Only 443,000 CableCARDs deployed into consumer’s equipment originally appeared on Engadget HD on Wed, 30 Sep 2009 18:11:00 EST.

Cablevision asks FCC for a waiver to encrypt all Clear QAM channels

CablevisionFlying in the face of those who think that cable operators are allowed to encrypt every channel….

Cablevision has petitioned the FCC for a waiver to do just that. Evidently it is argued that even the basic tier should encrypted to save money on truck rolls that are currently required to disconnect service. As usual, the FCC is requesting the comment of opposing views, so it’s not to late to be heard. But it seems to us that Cablevision is going to have a hard time arguing to protect these channels in the clear, when it’s the same channels you can get for free with an antenna. Add in all the customers who brought home a new TV and just plugged it into the cable and did a channel scan, and you have yourselves a waiver we’d like to see denied.

Net neutrality: FCC proposes three new rules

VN:F [1.8.1_1037]
Rating: 0.0/10 (0 votes cast)
bill-of-rights-smallThe FCC’s net neutrality guidelines would be a bill of rights for Internet users by prohibiting providers from blocking legal content or cutting connection speeds without explaining why.

The Obama administration proposed new rules of the road for the Internet Monday, standing up for the consumer-oriented principle known as net neutrality.

The guiding idea is that the big cable companies that build the information highway shouldn’t exert much control over where users drive.

Or, to cast the debate more specifically, proponents say it’s about making sure that Comcast or Time Warner doesn’t unfairly limit the potential for the next Facebook or Skype to arise.

FCC To Introduce Net Neutrality Rule

VN:F [1.8.1_1037]
Rating: 10.0/10 (2 votes cast)

sti2Newly proposed net neutrality rule, being introduced Monday, could prevent telecommunications, cable and wireless companies from blocking Internet applications, according to sources at the agency.

Julius Genachowski, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, will discuss the rules Monday during a keynote speech at The Brookings Institute. He isn’t expected to drill into many details, but the proposal will specifically be for an additional guideline on how operators like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast can control what goes on their networks. That additional guideline would prevent the operators from discriminating, or act as gatekeepers, of Web content and services.
