Windows 7 Troubleshooting, part 1

In part one of this (hopefully) two part series, we’ll examine the Troubleshooting control panel in Windows 7, specifically its program compatibility wizard. Don’t want to use Windows XP mode? Maybe this tool will help.

Troubleshooting in Windows has always been a mixed bag. The operating system’s error messages typically range from unhelpfully ambiguous (Windows cannot eject this drive, one or more applications may be using it) to downright cryptic (my personal favorite is the Windows 9x-era “Your computer has performed an illegal operation”). In the vast majority of cases, users are stuck with puzzling out the problem on their own.

Microsoft has taken a step toward changing that with the new Troubleshooting applet in the Control Panel. Let’s see how useful this addition to Windows really is.

You’ll find the Troubleshooting panel in the Control Panel, or by typing “troubleshooting” into the Search bar in the Start menu. The first time you launch it, the applet may ask you if you’d like to keep it up to date using the Internet – I see no reason not to, and so this guide assumes that you’re keeping the Troubleshooting panel updated.

Don’t expect anything out of a science fiction novel like placeshifting — better look to the gurus at Sling Media for that — but if you’re just looking for a nice, easy way to peruse your channel guide and set up TiVo recordings remotely from the soft glow of your BlackBerry’s screen, there’s a new option in town. The aptly-named TiVo for BlackBerry app lets you record one-off shows, set up Season Passes, and browse a guide that looks surprisingly similar to the UI you’ll find on the TiVo itself. It’s available for download now from App World, and rest assured, you don’t need to worry about blowing through your carrier’s data caps with this one.

win7-box-artMicrosoft had originally confirmed that Windows 7 wouldn’t be released till 2010. We then started hearing rumours that it could come along in time for the holiday season.

And finally on the 2nd June, Microsoft announced Windows 7 would be available from the 22nd October.

So why did they bring forward the release date?

I’ll be interested in hearing your opinions on this but I thought I’d let you know mine first.

With Windows 7’s launch just around the corner, Microsoft seems to be trying its best to come up with new – creative – ideas to increase the public awareness of Windows 7.

The software giant has gone from TV commercials to as far as letting people host their own Launch Parties. And now we hear about a new “Windows Café” opening up at 47 Boulevard de Sébastopol in Paris.
