nvidiaGood news for people with nVidia graphics cards – today, the manufacturer released its 191.07 graphics drivers for all desktop graphics cards. As with the last few releases, these drivers fully support both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7.

These drivers support the usual goodies for users of cards in the GeForce 8 series or above – namely, PhysX, CUDA, WDDM 1.1, and DirectCompute, a series of technologies geared toward making your graphics card do more than play the latest games.

So what? It’s just another driver release, right? Well, that in itself is remarkable, and it shows just how far ahead Windows 7 is of Windows Vista.

Flash 10.1 announced for just about anything with a screen, webOS and WinMo betas this year (update: Pre video!)

Flash 10 already supports HD video on the desktop, but 10.1 — announced this week at Adobe’s MAX conference in Los Angeles — is being billed the first to really reap the full benefits of the Open Screen Project by unifying feature sets across a wide variety of platforms on the desktop, the laptop, and the pocket. As usual, Windows, Mac, and Linux will all get hooked up with the latest release, but public betas of 10.1 for Windows Mobile and webOS will be hitting before the end of the year as well followed by Android and Symbian in “early” 2010. RIM’s also gotten official with its rumored membership in the Open Screen Project, though the lack of a timeline for 10.1 support in BlackBerry OS is a stark reminder of the long technical road that lies ahead for Waterloo as it tries to match the smartphone competition tit-for-tat in the multimedia space. At the end of the day, mobile Flash means nothing without the horsepower to properly drive it, so let’s hope that Tegra, Snapdragon, and next-generation architectures like OMAP4 start to come on board en masse just as these builds come out of beta.

Speaking of fast chipsets, the other big news out of the show is that Flash 10.1 will take advantage of GPU acceleration on a number of key mobile platforms, including both nVidia’s Tegra and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon alongside ION for smooth (well, theoretically smooth) 720p and 1080p video on the latest generation of netbooks and smartbooks.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac releasing October 2

A tiny little beta leak earlier this month let BlackBerry-toting Mac fans knew that something good was coming in the near future, and now we know it’s very near indeed (though a bit later than expected). On October 2 RIM will release BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac, specifically at 1:00pm EST. That means instead of wrapping up your busy work-week being productive you can instead spend the afternoon fighting long download queues and playing around getting this app configured — for purely work-related purposes of course, like syncing with iCal, Address Book, and automatically backing up contacts. Just don’t tell your boss you’ll also be able to sync your iTunes collection to your handset, including album art, something that should make Pre-owning Bob down the hall a little jealous. Again, the fun starts Friday afternoon at 1:00 EST. Clear your calendars accordingly.

Windows 7: Faster Than A Snow Leopard?

Maybe I was one of the few, but I didn’t get why everybody hated Vista so much…until Windows 7 appeared.

I was one of the few that liked Vista despite its many faults. The glass windows and renewed UI was welcome after staring at the bright blues and greens of XP for so many years. Other than the many changes in appearance, perhaps the biggest area for improvement in Windows Vista was in system performance.  We’ll take a quick look at a few areas where Windows 7 makes Vista look like a 300 pound man trying to run a marathon.
