What it takes to properly convert a 2D movie to 3D

Converting G-Force to 3D

3DTVs are useless without content and while to some sports is the killer app for 3D, others prefer movies. When it comes to new movies, there’s Avatar and then there’s everything else — most movies are converted to 3D instead of using 3D cameras. The company In-Three originally formed with the intent of converting classics like Star Wars to 3D — yes Lucas says he wants to do all six — but with all the money 3D movies are making in theaters today, In-Three is spending their time working with producers on new movies like Alice in Wonderland.

Anyone who saw both Alice and Clash of the Titans will tell you that all dimensionalization isn’t created equal. While most didn’t realize Alice wasn’t actually shot in 3D, reviews of Clash were titled like “the first film to actually be made worse by being in 3D.” While the dimensionalization of Alice took four to six months, Clash was done in eight to ten weeks — as well as being converted by different companies. We can’t blame ‘em for trying though, as In-Three tells 3DCineCast blog it uses four to six hundred people while wearing 3D glasses 50 to 75 percent of the day, and costs about 80 to 100 thousand dollars per minute to do dimensionalization properly. Which is just crazy as well as makes us wonder how that’s cheaper than just using 3D cameras. The good part about doing it in post processing though is it gives the creators more artistic control as the dimensionalization is done by hand, frame by frame. Of course the concern is that people will see movies like Clash of the Titans in 3D and write off the dimensionalization process all together, or worse 3D entirely.

Verizon lays the smack down to AT&T in new TV Commercial

Now I love my iPhone but I will openly admit that that coverage on AT&T’s network is nowhere near as good as my coverage was when I was on the Verizon Wireless Network.

Now it seems Verizon is letting people know, in a clever spoof to the iPhone “There’s an app for that” commercials

Watch below “There’s a map for that”

Vonage Mobile iPhone and BlackBerry apps available for download

You remember Vonage right? The trailblazing VoiP company is still around and appears at first glance to have instigated a bit of a coup in the battle for VoiP calls over AT&T connections. Unfortunately they haven’t, at least not yet. See, the free Vonage Mobile app just added to the iTunes App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch has been approved for making international calls over AT&T’s cellular network (take that Skype) in addition to WiFi. Unfortunately, we’re not talking about SIP calls over EDGE/HSDPA data. Like the rejected Google Voice app, if you’re out of WiFi range but still have voice service then Vonage Mobile will redirect your international call (entered directly into the App or selected from your address book) to a local access number in the US — you’re then using your AT&T minutes while being charged Vonage Mobile’s discounted worldwide calling rates. The app is strictly pay-as-you-go for the moment and will not give free global calling to those who subscribe to Vonage’s $25 per month Vonage World plan — Vonage says that will come before the end of the year. The Vonage Mobile app for BlackBerry only works over your carrier’s voice network while the iPod touch app only works over WiFi, naturally. Also, BlackBerry users will revert to Vonage’s lower rates anytime they make an international call whereas iPhone users must launch the Vonage application first.

[Thanks, Ricky B.]

Palm Pre webOS 1.2.1 update fixes iTunes syncing

Palm: webOS 1.2.1

Palm has just issued a webOS 1.2.1 update for the Palm Pre. This update is 38 MB. If you’re a Palm Pre user, you can go to the Updates app, and download and install it right now. This new update fixes iTunes 9.0.1 syncing!

When Apple first released iTunes 9 during the September 9 event, they blocked the Palm Pre from syncing with iTunes. This is not the first time Apple did this either. Apple keeps blocking the Palm Pre with each and every iTunes update, but Palm has always ended up fixing the syncing in the end. It makes sense for Apple to block the Palm Pre, after all it’s a competitor to the iPhone.
